Coming over from the St. Louis Cardinals on June 15, 1958, for Gene Freese and Johnny O’Brien, infielder Dick Schofield played a limited role for the Pirates in 1960, playing in only 65 games. It can be said, however, that without his effort in September, the Bucs would have had a much more difficult time capturing their third World Series championship. With soon-to-be MVP Dick Groat down with a broken wrist, Schofield was superb. Between September 6 and October 2, the Springfield, Illinois, native hit .403 with a .481 OBP in 21 games. When Groat came back, Schofield returned to the bench. In the World Series, he went one for three.
